OVERVIEW
Humanity & Inclusion were developing a face-to-face course titled An Introduction to Disability and required a complementary digital version for self-study. The online course consisted of six modules designed to reinforce and extend the classroom learning. Accessibility and inclusivity were central requirements. The course needed to meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards while remaining engaging and interactive. It also needed to be developed in French, with the structure designed to support future translations into Arabic and other languages.
ACTION
The digital course was developed in parallel with the face-to-face programme. We worked closely with Humanity & Inclusion and the partner agency responsible for the in-person training to ensure both versions remained aligned in content and messaging. To maximise accessibility, we developed a custom interface and template optimised for screen readers, keyboard navigation and clear visual hierarchy. Our QA process was expanded to include detailed accessibility checks, particularly focusing on screen reader compatibility and keyboard-only navigation. The course included accessible interactions, illustrated scenarios and infographics to support visual learning, alongside simple animations and optional reading materials. A diverse set of characters was created to represent people with disabilities in a positive and empowering way, reinforcing the course’s core message of inclusion. After completing the English version, we translated the course into French, and later Burmese.
IMPACT
The final course successfully passed Humanity & Inclusion’s accessibility checks and met all WCAG 2.1 requirements. Its accessible design and translation-ready structure also make it easier to expand into additional languages in the future.
